The ECO-CYCLO Movement 2007

The ECO-CYCLO Movement was initiated at the European Cycling Association’s General Assembly in December 2005. In its first season it took the shape of promoting the Ecoflag (a symbol for environmental and action in sport) during mass participation cycling events and resulted in the development of a partnership between the AEC and the NPO the developed the Ecoflag, Global Sports Alliance (GSA).

After participating in the Global Forum for Sport and Environment (G-ForSE) 2006 at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the mass participation cyclosportives events the Ardechoise, the Quebrantahuesos, the Ariegeoise and the Bosses du 13, embarked on a course of promoting environmental attitudes and a spirit of eco-citizenship among the thousands of participants taking part, as well as promoting responsibility among event organizers, the community and local authorities.

In order to encourage compliance, keep a watchful eye and educate participants in keeping these rich environments in pristine condition, a Cycle Patrol was established wearing distinctive green cycling jerseys. Supporting this initiative was the French National Olympic Committee, the French Cycling Federation, Global Sports Alliance, Le Cycle magazine and the equipment manufacturer, Anaeli.

In conjunction with these actions, a green Eco-bracelet made its debut as a symbol of the movement and a sign of commitment among cyclists. The spirit was also embedded in an ECO-CYCLO Charter, which states:

1 - Nature is beautiful and the road is not a dustbin. In all circumstances, whether walking, driving or in competition, I will reduce waste and packing and separate/ dispose of garbage in the appropriate place.
2 - I will comply with the rules of the Highway Code, and my helmet is my faithful fellow traveler.
3 - Cycling is a marvelous, excellent sport for health. I will not jeopardize my health and these moments of happiness by using harmful and prohibited drugs.

Assessing the success of this year’s season, the AEC will work to develop even more significant and concrete actions in 2008. Cooperation with existing partners will be strengthened and new partnerships developed to tackle equipment, technical and logistical challenges in establishing the ECO-CYCLO Movement in mass participant cycling events within Europe and beyond.
