Delhi 2010 and Pune 2008 will be Green Games

The Organising Committee of the XIX Commonwealth Games is partnering with the United National Environment Programme (UNEP) to ensure a "Green Commonwealth Games" in 2010. The tie-up with UNEP is both for Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games as well the third Youth Commonwealth Games in Pune next year.

It will be the first time that the Organising Committee of a Commonwealth Games will joining hands with UNEP, which in the past has been associated with the Olympic Games.

"This partnership will not just ensure the best ever Commonwealth Games but it will also make it a Games with a conscience," said Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of the Organising Committee.

"Ensuring that our youth imbibe the right values, we have also tied up with UNEP for the Youth Games in Pune next year," added Mr. Kalmadi.

Recognising that major sporting events also impact the environment in many ways like clearing land for setting up event sites, the need for large volumes of water, waste disposal etc, the Organising Committee has made a pledge to ensure that the Commonwealth Games will be a "Green Games".

This means that the Organising Committee will ensure that both the Delhi Games as well the Youth Games to be held in Pune next year is committed to environmental excellence in planning, executing and staging the games.

UNEP has certain standards for compliance that will have to be met before the stamp of organising a green game is awarded. The various stakeholders are already in the process of meeting these requirements.

The partnership with the Organising Committee and UNEP will help ensure that the highest standards are maintained.

As part of the environmental programme, both Pune and Delhi will look at issues like tree planting and anti-litter campaigns as well as using of renewal energy sources and efficient water management.

"With the help of UNEP, we will organise workshops and programmes that will help bring in the entire community to better understand issues such as Green procurement, environment management as well as green accommodation," said Mr. Kalmadi.
