AEC Expands Environmental Action in 2007

The European Cycling Association (AEC) has announced an expansion of its environmental activities for the 2007 season with the ECO CYCLO Movement. Building on initiatives taken in 2006, the AEC will be encouraging riders to avoid littering and will promote a healthy respect for the natural environment.

In 2006, the AEC spearheaded a drive to incorporate environmental considerations into major European cycling events--such as l’Ardéchoise, La Quebrantahuesos, l’Ariégeoise, and les Bosses du 13—through its partnership with the non-profit organization, Global Sports Alliance (GSA). Developing on this initiative of respect and environmental awareness for the 2007 season, the organization is making Cyclosportive events a leader in promoting conscientiousness with regards to one of the priority stakes of our time-- respect for the environment.

The ECO CYCLO Movement will promote the concept of eco-citizenship in the management of waste, and will encourage event organizers and partners to take the necessary means to ensure that events are kept clean and are environmentally responsible.

This Movement will become an integral part of the AEC, in harmony with the initial objectives of the organization, and actions will be taken on the national and international level, with special focus on France, Spain and Italy in the first year.

“Cyclos Patrols” made up of volunteer cyclists will help to instigate the ECO CYCLO Movement and a green ECO CYCLO bracelet will be introduced as a sign of recognition and a pledge to associate sporting practices with respect for the environment through the observation of the measures laid out in a “ECO CYCLO Charter”.
