ESPN's X Games Take Environmentality to the Slopes

6 February 2006--The ESPN Winter X Games took to the slopes of Aspen on 28 - 31 January in a manner that brought spectators the very best in sports competition while at the same time giving a strong nod to environmental protection.

In a continued effort to establish ESPN X Games as a leader in hosting environmentally responsible spectator sports, X Games Environmentality™ has introduced environmental initiatives onsite and behind the scenes, generating environmental awareness among the public while producing the greenest games yet.

Some of this year's environmentally friendly efforts include:
-One hundred percent of Winter X Games 10 is being powered by energy made from wind, a renewable energy source that produces minimal, if any, pollutants.
-Snow cats and event shuttle buses use biodiesel, which burns cleaner than conventional diesel fuel.
-In an effort to reduce waste sent to local landfills, spectators, staff and athletes will be asked to sort waste into recycle, compost and trash bins.
-Many of the paper and plastic food containers used for event staff are made from sugar cane and corn--biodegradable materials that allow this waste be composted after the event.
-Together, Aspen Skiing Company and ESPN built the Winter X Games SuperPipe for skiing and snowboard competitions using a dirt base instead of the more traditional approach of using snow. This technique helped to save more than 4 million gallons of water and ,000 in energy costs.
-Spectators who "get caught recycling" by an ‘X Games Environmentality’ (XGE) volunteer will receive tokens they can exchange for cool prizes, many of which present an environmentally friendly message and are made from recycled materials.

"We're very proud of the work that we have done and continue to do when it comes to environmental responsibility and education," said Chris Stiepock, Winter X Games general manager. "ESPN and the Winter X Games realize that we attract a young audience and we are in a terrific position to lead by example and show the next generation viable alternatives for energy and the utilization of natural resources."
